For employers: How to terminate and negotiate severance agreements

Your first step is a thorough review of firm policies including handbooks and any employment offer notices that you gave the jobholder. To discipline a jobholder properly, you should follow a method that gives this individual chances to fix her or his behavior. Therefore, dismiss on Friday whenever possible. Most supervisors and managers can't lay off a subordinate without first getting the approval of management and Personnel.

Second, include any extra payments and benefits that you own the employee.
